Pipeline Robotics

Our range of pipeline robotics services utilize proprietary technology to help customers reduce operations, maintenance costs and increase safety while meeting the increasingly complex demands of regulators, energy customers, and the public. Our operations team and field operators work together to bring decades of experience into developing in-pipe technologies that can be used for inspecting underground assets, along with detecting and locating.

CISBOT

CISBOT technology enables gas networks to safely extend the life of large diameter cast iron gas main assets with no disruption of gas service to customers and reduced environmental impact. The technology remediates all joints in the main by injecting an industry-proven anaerobic sealant into the joint which can repair existing leaks and prevent new leaks from forming for 50 years.

X-ID® Cross Bore Detection

This solution for detecting cross bores from within PE gas mains and services was developed by ULC Technologies in collaboration with major U.S. gas utilities. The patent-pending technology utilizes an acoustic sensor to pick up sound patterns, which detect and locate cross bores.

PRX250

Designed to enter pressurized natural gas distribution mains, the PRX250 is used by some of the largest gas utilities in the US to respond to a wide range of operational challenges

PRX Mini

The PRX Mini was purpose built for internal inspection of pressured PE and Aldyl-A gas distribution mains.

Large VGC

The Large VGC Crawler enters live 18″ to 48″ gas distribution mains to deliver detailed visual inspection and mapping data.

Small VGC

The Small VGC is deployed to conduct internal inspections and mapping in live metallic and PE gas mains ranging from 12″ to 16″ in diameter.

Leak Detection & Repair Robot

Leak Detection & Repair Robot uses cutting-edge component technologies and the latest robotic design concepts to detect, locate and classify inline gas leaks and to repair the damaged areas.

M1 Live Gas Main Inspection Robot

Our live gas main pan/tilt camera crawler was developed specifically to inspect 24” – 48” mains. The crawler system is primarily used in the UK and can navigate past features in the pipe such as WEKO Seals.

Vent Line Inspection Tool

ULC Technologies is developing next generation technology to inspect high pressure vent lines in the UK to determine the type of remedial works that need to be performed.

Magnetic Casing Crawler

ULC Technologies developed the Micro-Magnetic Casing Crawler (MCC), a remotely controlled robotic inspection tool to directly assess cased gas mains.

CIRRIS XI™ Inspection Robot

CIRRIS XI™ is the first robot that makes wall thickness and stress data available to gas network operators. The technology provides a means to assess the structural integrity of the pipe through these measurements to improve the way gas distribution utilities measure risk and ensure their assets are a good candidate for rehabilitation.

CIRRIS XR® Repair Robot

CIRRIS XR® Repair Robot can renew up to 100 mechanical and lead/jute joints and internal mechanical seals to stop and prevent leakage. The robotic solution allows this to be done from just one small excavation in the street, at a lower cost and with less disruption than pipe replacement or other rehabilitation methods.

Infrastructure Automation

Our engineering teams have developed technologies that combine machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to autonomously provide end-to-end solutions for roadworks as well as overhead electric distribution systems. We are always looking for new partners seeking solutions to better improve infrastructure utilizing automation.

Robotic Roadworks & Excavation System

In collaboration with UK-gas network SGN, ULC Technologies developed an all-electric robotic system to revolutionize the way that utility companies, energy networks and other industries carry out roadworks. The Robotic Roadworks and Excavation System (RRES) combines below-ground locating sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for safer, faster, and smarter roadworks.

AUSMOS: Robotic GPR Mapping and Mark Out

AUSMOS is a semi-autonomous robotic platform that detects and marks-out below-ground infrastructure utilizing a sensor suite comprised of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic sensors. This advanced robotic platform automates underground mapping enabling denser GPR data collection and more powerful post-processing techniques that results in easier to interpret data, reducing the risk for accidental damage to buried assets.

AIM: Asset Identification & Mapping

Asset Identification and Mapping (AIM) combines machine learning and a vehicle-mounted data collection system to autonomously generate an interactive database of utility poles and assets, create GIS mapping and conduct inspection of overhead electric distribution system.

Advanced Utility Equipment

Our suite of advanced utility equipment is developed hand-in-hand with our utility customers by identifying common industry needs and working together to develop innovative solutions. 

Drawdown Compressor

ULC Technologies’ Drawdown Compressor utilizes cross-compression methods to eliminate the need for pipeline operators to vent or flare gas. Natural gas supplies can be transferred from an isolated section of pipe back into the active system.

APT Automated Pressure Tester

ULC is working to improve gas industry integrity tests and pressure tests by automating the pressurization and monitoring of gas pipelines to improve safety and eliminate human error.

High Volume Purge Unit

The High Volume Purge Unit enables the use of diesel compressor exhaust to purge gas mains and remove the need to calculate and purchase large quantities of bottled nitrogen. The solution significantly reduces costs and supports emergency response.

Sensor Technology

Utilizing a range of different sensor technologies, including Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and acoustic sensors, our team has developed new solutions that support pipeline inspection, damage prevention and subsurface mapping.

EMAT Guided Wave

Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) technology uses a permanent magnet and electric coil to generate ultrasonic waves, allowing it to measure pipeline wall thickness and detect, assess, and characterize defects or material properties.

CIRRIS XI™ Inspection Robot

CIRRIS XI™ is an advanced pipeline robotic platform that can deploy sensors in live gas pipelines. The initial payload was developed to obtain wall thickness data using EMAT sensors.

Bombyx Fiber Installation Robot

Facebook Connectivity, in collaboration with ULC Technologies and several other partners, has been working on developing a robotic solution that can drastically reduce the cost of fiber installation. The robotic platform will crawl along overhead medium-voltage powerlines and cross obstacles to wrap a specialized fiber optic cable around the power line.

Breaker Racking & Storage Robot

ULC Technologies teamed up with Con Edison to develop an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) capable of racking of medium voltage circuit breakers within electric distribution substations, providing a safer operation for electric utility workers.

Automated Cable End Preparation Machine

Developed in collaboration with Con Edison, the Automated Cable End Preparation Machine enables utility personnel to remotely prepare a cable and conduct other operations on medium voltage cables. The technology contributes to improved worker safety because it allows for an autonomous remote operation.

UAS Technology

Our team works with customers to integrate unmanned aerial system technology into their business-as-usual operations through R&D, sensor integration, machine learning, and bespoke UAS development. 

H1000

ULC Technologies’ H1000 UAS was developed from the ground up to deliver the safest flights in a range of sensitive utility and energy industry applications.

V3000

Our V3000 is a large-scale UAS platform being developed to conduct long range inspections and surveys both on- and off-shore.
